What is buyer protection?
Updated 5 Oct 2026
On this page
Buyer protection is an optional add-on at checkout. It lets you report a problem with your order, and if we find in your favour, you're refunded to your Yews wallet.
What it costs
Buyer protection is 5% of the item price after any discounts, with a minimum of R10. Shipping isn't included in the calculation. You'll see the exact amount next to the Buyer protection switch at checkout before you pay.
Items (after discounts) | Buyer protection |
|---|---|
R100 | R10 (the minimum) |
R300 | R15 |
R1 500 | R75 |
How it works
Buyer protection is switched on by default at checkout. You can switch it off if you don't want it.
Your payment is held by Yews. It isn't released to the seller until you mark the order as received.
If your item doesn't arrive, is significantly not as described, or is unsafe, tap Report a problem on your order before you mark it as received.
We review the order and may ask you and the seller for information.
If we find in your favour, you're refunded to your Yews wallet. Otherwise the payment is released to the seller.
Report a problem before you mark your order as received, and within 3 days of delivery. After 3 days without a report, the payment is released to the seller automatically.
With and without buyer protection
Feature | With buyer protection | Without it |
|---|---|---|
Fee | 5% of the item price, minimum R10 | None |
Payment held until you confirm receipt | Yes | Yes |
Report a problem or open a dispute | Yes | No |
Either way, your payment is held securely and only released to the seller after delivery. Without buyer protection you can't report a problem or open a dispute on that order, so check your item as soon as it arrives.
What isn't covered
Orders where you switched buyer protection off.
Anything paid for outside Yews. Off-platform deals aren't covered, so always pay through the app.
Where your refund goes
Approved refunds are credited to your Yews wallet. If you paid partly with Yews Points, those points are returned to your points balance. You can spend wallet money on Yews or withdraw it to your bank account. See How does my Yews wallet work?
Read more about reporting in Something's wrong with my order. The full rules are in our Terms of Service.
